David:
As a self admitted golf equipment nut, I am constantly on the look-out for new and better golf equipment. Recently, I purchased several new drivers from your store. The purpose of this letter is to give you some feedback on your drivers as a result of my “on course” testing of these drivers during practice rounds at my local course, Strawberry Farms. Strawberry Farms Golf Course puts a premium on long and straight drives. Almost all drives out of the fairway become lost balls and result in a penalty stroke. The course also features several long par 4’s and a par 5 that is the longest par 5 hole in Orange County from the back tees.
My experience with the new drivers, after hitting them through several rounds of play, is as follows:
- The driver combination of the Graffaloy Pro Launch Red shaft with your new Vector 460 head hit the ball further than any driver I have tried. It is longer by as much as 20 yards over the second longest driver that I own (see below). This combination also has the best “feedback and feel” of the new drivers.
- The second longest driver I have hit and own is the combination of the new Gram an UL 540shaft with the Vector 460 head. The low torque of this shaft seems to produce more consistent drives that find the fairway every time I put a decent swing on the club. It is also more able to handle more swing speed, and a quicker transition from backswing to downswing, producing more drives in the fairway on not-so-perfect swings.
- Other driver combinations that I own and have tested with top quality replacement shafts similar to those above, in combination with heads from Taylor Made (R-7 TP and R-5 TP), Ping Rapture, Cleveland Launcher Comp and even Vector 444, do not have the distance and feel that I am able to achieve with the Vector 460 head.
- None of my “off the shelf” top line drivers (Taylor Made, Cleveland, Ping, etc.) can touch your custom made drivers when it comes to distance and fairway consistency.
As a point of reference, I am a Senior golfer with “senior pro tour” distance, low single digit handicap, and can keep up (distance-wise) with the young, apprentice professions at Strawberry Farms most of the time.
I highly recommend your driver shaft/head combinations that you fit to individual golfers over any “off-the-shelf” standard drivers being sold by local golf shops in Southern California.

Aloha David,
Hit about 20 balls on the range and went right out and played all the woods at a very tough course--Luana Hills on Oahu. The driver was absolutely awesome. Did not hit anything but very good to superb drives all day with a draw. Teed it up high and swung easy and fluid. Great feel and awesome results. Very easy to hit and seems like it has very large sweet spot, especially around the toe. A couple of times it corrected shots I felt were too far on the toe and I got a good result. The slightly lofty 9° was the right choice and the shaft feels better than the Gramman, but I am not comparing them at the same time or place. The fairway woods were also terrific. They certainly felt a bit heavy in the head to me, since I was coming from the Warbirds with Memphis 10s, but really shocked me with the extra distance. Did not get to hit them much, but all 5 shots were quality. I hit the 7-wood easy on a long par-4 (2-hcp) and overshot the green. ProLites seem very responsive and perfect for me. I like the look of your heads and they too seem easy to strike the dimpled sphere with. Frankly, I was so long and consistent with the driver that I will not need a 2-wood/4-wood combo anymore. Your choice of lofts for me is right on. Looking forward to hitting the 7-wood from some of those draconian Aussie fairway bunkers. Great looking sticks and those Avon grips are a really nice feel. Thanks for the great advice, club making, service and price. I am extremely pleased and will keep you informed of my progress while I am Down Under.

Virtually every golfer I know, with a few notable exceptions -- primarily pros, ex-pros or exceptional amateurs -- hit clubs with shafts in them that are improperly installed and simply do not "fit" their individual swings. Most of those shafts are too stiff but, more importantly, production clubs manufactured today, regardless of the company, are not matched club to club to any recognizable standard or fitted to any individual golfer, despite the industry hype. The simple truth is that we, the public golfer, regardless of our ability, buy clubs made from the "left" side of the factory, those production line clubs assembled with no measurable regard to shaft spine angle, frequency, flow, consistent swing weights or proper lofts and lies. (If you doubt this, take your newly purchased clubs to a professional club fitter, one outside the industry. Have him check the lofts, lies, spine angles and frequencies of your new clubs. You'll be amazed by the inconsistencies, the obvious lack of quality control.) The irony, of course, is the industry's tacit position that fitted clubs do not matter because the far greater percentage of golfers are not able to tell, or more specifically, feel the difference between individually fitted clubs and mass produced ones anyway. They may, of course, be right, at least from a production standpoint. It simply is not cost effective to build each club in each set properly. At the same time, the industry is acutely aware of the benefit of properly fitted clubs. Note the number over the last decade of manufacturers who now welcome golfers to their on-site fitting centers. Also remember that no professional golfer worth his salt hits the same golf club you and I hit, regardless of the label on the club head. Those clubs are built on the "right" side of the factory with a far greater concern for proper individual fit and personal tolerances. So how does the public golfer get to the "right" side? One way is to become a professional golfer and get on somebody's staff. OK. Or, you can drive to a manufacturer's fitting center. There you will be fitted for golf clubs. Then the problem starts: you will order or purchase your newly fitted clubs from either your pro shop or any number of retail outlets in the area. And those clubs will be virtually no different than any other clubs made on the "left" side of the factory, except maybe for the swing weight and lie angle because, in effect, that's all the manufacturer has fitted you for. (If you're still skeptical, take those newly fitted clubs to that professional club fitter. Have him measure the frequency of the shafts, club to club. Have him test the spine alignment and flow, club to club. Have him measure the swing weight, club to club. If nothing else, you'll soon realize how much time you wasted at the manufacturer's fitting center. You would have done as well by hitting balls off the mat at Roger Dunn's and buying a set of clubs off the floor. It's the same set the manufacturer will send you.) So what's left? Where does the public golfer - the scratch, the single digit, the 18 handicap, the guy who insists he doesn't care if he improves or not, which is a lie of course - go to find clubs that truly fit his golf game, his own individual swing. Try this: a professional club fitter outside the industry, not inside it; someone who will take the real time necessary, regardless of your handicap, to fit you with clubs that give you the best chance possible to play golf successfully given your ability. Needless to say, I've found one: David Dugally at Golf Coast, Incorporated in Huntington Beach, California. Dave is a perfectionist. He not only knows club building, he also enjoys building clubs. After explaining to him that my 55 year old back had paid the price of 40 years of golf, along with every other sport that relied on a ball of some kind, David spent several hours diagnosing and computer diagramming my current swing as well as explaining in what way certain shafts, both graphite and steel, would be best suited to my particular ability. In addition, Dave provided a wide variety of custom iron club heads from which to choose - forged cast, cavity back to blade. The irons Dave built form me are precise in every way: the frequencies are dead perfect for each club throughout the set, the spine angles are properly aligned, the swing weights are dead on, the lofts and lies exact; the 90 gram steel shafts are not only lighter but more forgiving. My distance control and ball flight are the best they've been in years. The graphite shafts Dave installed in my existing 3 wood and driver are far superior to the original manufacturer shafts. In my first full round with my new irons and metal woods at The Village course in Maui, I hit 12 fairways and 15 greens. (If David can now figure out how to help me read grainy bermuda greens that run to the sea, I'd be dangerous) The point here is obvious: if you want to get on the "right" side of the factory, don't go to the factory. Even if you can't break a hundred, you will feel the difference of clubs personally built to fit your own swing. And get over the notion that good clubs must have Titleist or Taylor embossed on them. The gram weights of my new iron heads were better matched than the industry set I was hitting. It also should not surprise you that my entire new set of 11 irons, 3 through lob wedge, cost less than the original price of my existing set of 8 irons, 3 through PW. Here, however, is the best of all reasons to visit David: you'll only have yourself to blame for hitting lousy shots because it certainly won't be the clubs. David, I thought you might like this expose as my way of thanking you again for taking the time to build my clubs. Where were you 25 years ago.

Dear David
Thank you for making my new driver, the Vector 370. I played the Callaway Steel Head III for a year and was very happy with the accuracy but gave up distance. I switched to the Taylor Made R540 for the past 3 months and got more distance but gave up accuracy (despite the press on it). I came to you to have my Taylor R540 shaft frequency evaluated because it was very hard to hit. (You found the frequency of my "Regular" shaft to be 225 -- whippier than a senior shaft). In short, you built me a custom driver with the Vector 370 head and a shaft frequency tuned to my swing for half the cost of my Taylor Made. I began using it at Aviara last weekend and am AMAZED at the combination of distance and accuracy. I can hit it straight down the middle over 300 yards. Even my mishits off the toe went 260 straight down the middle. I used to be a 250 yard driver but with your driver, I'm hitting it long like the young guys (I'm 47). The best part is the incredible accuracy. I even have the confidence to aim to specific spots on the fairway and hit it there 90% of the time.. Last weekend I hit 14 out of 14 fairways. Your driver is the most accurate, long distance, soft feeling club I have ever used. Thank you!

To all at Golf Coast,
I just wanted to thank Jeff, Sean and Bryan for all their help. I am so pleased with my Driver, 3 wood and irons that they put together for me. I was playing very well before coming in to your store and I can not believe how much better I hit the ball now. I honestly have gained 30 yards on my drive which sounds impossible but true. I was averaging 270 yards with a max distance of 310. With the new shaft they put in, I average 290 and have hit it 340 yards. My 3 wood is also very strait and long. I hit it around 270. It is very hard for someone at my level to gain so much, but with your fitting technology and great shafts, I was able to gain both distance and accuracy. Again, Thank you for all your help.

Sean and David,
I want to say "thanks" for the free driver fitting while I was at Huntington Beach last week. The shaft that I bought from you has made a tremendous difference in my driving accuracy. I've hit 1.5 buckets of balls with the newly shafted TM580. Just as Sean said, my drives have straightened considerably. It did take me a few practice shots to get over the feeling of not "letting go" in order to not go right. Also as Sean said would happen, I did lose some yardage at first. I've actually gained yardage now that I don't hold back as much. I've always heard that if you slice a more flexible shaft helps correct that somewhat. Going to an X flex shaft after using a R flex for so long seemed like opposite overkill but it wasn't. It was the perfect flex for my very late shaft loaded swing. My wife doesn't golf but walks with me occasionally when I golf. She noticed immediately how much straighter I'm hitting the ball. I absolutely believe that your fitting method is the best. Thanks again y'all.

Hi Bryan,
Just a note to let you know that I am really pleased with the shafts in my Irons and Driver. I was somewhat skeptical when I first heard about your services because I had always thought that "swing speed" was the primary determinant for shaft flex. Had I continued on that path, I would NEVER have had the shafts you recommended put into my Irons and Driver.
However, after a few months, I'm just as pleased, if not more, than I was when I first got the new shafts. The same seems to apply to the others that I know have used your services, too. The shafts that you recommended and put into my Irons and Driver continue to perform at a level above anything I have experienced before them, and believe me, I tried many! It's sometimes hard to express, but as a friend says, "they are just easier to hit".
Thanks again, and once I get my new fairway woods, I will be bring them down so you can put the correct shafts in them, too.

Dear Golf Coast,
I have been playing golf for about 8 years and play to a 13 hcp from the senior men's tees. I have been using the Taylor Made Ti 320 driver for the last three years. In the last couple of months, I have switched to the Vector Beta Ti 444 driver because it gives me about 20 - 25 yards more on my drives and has enabled me to get on in regulation on long par 4's (360 - 380 yards with dog legs and hills). I demo'd the Taylor Made R580 driver as well and found that the Vector 444 driver with the shaft fitted for me by Dave DuGally at Golf Coast Equipment in Huntington Beach, CA gave me better results for length and consistency.

Dear Golf Coast,
When I hit the clubs they are wonderfull! When I don't hit them correctly they are almost like the previous clubs when I hit them properly... I believe that when I hit the club properly it is ~20 yards farther than the previous one. I'm hitting at least 4 times a week so I'm working at it... Thanks John@theGoodwins
